The Mary Keohane Bursary was set up on the receipt of a generous bequest of €20,000 from the estate of the late Mary Keohane. Initially, sums were donated to schools in Ennis town to support educational initiatives. It was later decided to target selected individual Primary and Secondary School students who would most benefit from the support offered by the awarding of this bursary. The bursary will be awarded to assist in the development of the skills and competencies of the neediest applicants from primary or secondary schools who are unable to access funding from other sources. This assistance can vary from helping with the purchase of books for academic programmes to tools for apprentices and other materials to help support applicants in their quest to access educational opportunities which may have been heretofore out of their reach
The Mary Keohane Bursary committee will also endeavour to nurture and mentor the successful applicants, sourcing expert advice where necessary. The committee establishes contact with school principals and guidance teachers during the first term of each school year to identify suitable applicants. Applications may also be made by club members on behalf of suitable candidates. The Bursary is often granted top up funding from the club’s main fundraising activities
