The Lions Clubs International strategic vision is to reduce the prevalence of Diabetes and improve quality of life for those living with type 2 diabetes. As part of the Ennis Lions Club Diabetes Awareness Project, we are raising and promoting diabetes awareness in our local community. Diabetes Ireland and Diabetes UK (NI) estimates that there are 340,000 individuals with diabetes in Ireland and approximately 80% have Type 2 Diabetes. Lions Clubs Ireland, with 102 clubs and 2,300 members in the 32 counties are organising a variety of projects and events aimed at raising awareness of Type 2 Diabetes and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Ennis Lions Club together with Lions Clubs Ireland launched the Lions Ireland Type 2 Diabetes Awareness Strategy in November 2020, – joining Lions Clubs worldwide in adopting Diabetes as a Signature Project. Further awareness initiatives will be rolled out throughout the year.
If undiagnosed or poorly controlled, diabetes can cause blindness and damage your heart, arteries, nerves and kidneys! We encourage individuals to take a simple, online test that takes a few minutes to complete at www.diabetes.ie/living-with-diabetes/are-you-at-risk.
Ennis Lions club is confident that the project can create awareness of Type 2 Diabetes and greatly reduce the impact of the condition on individual and children’s health. In November 2020 many club members undertook online diabetes screening tests and these test were promoted in the community with radio interviews and articles in local press. Further initiatives to follow.
