Early in 2017 it was brought to the attention of the Ennis Lions Club that some children were attending Scoil Christ Ri without having had a breakfast. Research by the Club and school indicated that the Junction building, operated by Clare Youth Services, had an ideal kitchen cum lounge area, and after evaluating numbers and needs it was decided to proceed with a volunteer roster of Lions and some retired personnel.
Operating 25 weeks each school year, the Breakfast Club provides 100 nutritional breakfasts each week until March 2020, when the service had to be suspended due to the Covid Pandemic. The impact of the Breakfast Club stretches far beyond nutrition, with noticeable improvements in schooling, social interaction and skills of the participating children.
While the Covid Pandemic has seriously interrupted the Breakfast Club Project, Lions have diversified our activities to assist children in need of technological devices to assist with home learning. A number of tablet computers have been funded for 4 different primary schools in the Ennis area.
