The Mary Keohane Bursary (MKB) was set up on receipt of a generous bequest of 20,000 euro from the estate of the late Mary Keohane. While educational initiatives in both secondary and primary schools in Ennis have benefitted from this fund, the focus is now on supporting individual students. One of the recent recipients of this bursary is secondary school student and award winning pianist, Seán Shannon. The MKB support to Sean will have spanned at least three years before it’s successful conclusion. He can be heard playing Chopin’s Nocturne in C minor, on this video.
Applications for this bursary may be made by members of the Ennis Lions Club on behalf of suitable candidates. The committee will also contact the school principals and guidance councillors in the first term of the school year to identify students who would benefit from this bursary. The MKB committee will also endeavour to nurture and mentor the successful applicants, sourcing expert advice where necessary.
